Shangping (award vase) is often seen with a wide mouth, a slender neck and a round belly supported by a ring foot.  Appearing in the Yongzheng reign, it became very popular in the Qianlong period, but it was produced in every reign.  Their shapes are almost the same.  Shangping is often decorated with lotus scrolls in underglazed blue.  Lotus comes from swamps, but it is not defiled, so lotus is regarded as the symbol of purity and nobility.  In the Qing dynasty, the porcelain with lotus decorations were produced in large quantity.  The emperor awarded these vases to his officials hoping they would learn the spirit of lotus.  Therefore official reign marks are often seen on the bottom.  Among them, the Shangping of the Qianlong reign are the most precious pieces.
